Hi Stuart, I'm really glad that this has helped you find your grandfather's grave. Thanks too for your touching emails - it is wonderful to hear stories such as yours. Although I've replied to you by email, I thought I'd also leave a reply to your comment here so that others who may be doing similar research might find some of the other resources that are out there.

Although not included here, I have uploaded pictures of each of the stone tablets to my Flickr account. Unfortunately, I don't think all the names are included, since they are grabbed from a video clip which pans across the tablets. I wish I'd thought ahead and made sure I got every name, but thankfully, your grandfather's seems to be among them.

Have you seen The General Langfitt Story, subtitled "Polish Refugees Recount Their Experiences of Exile, Dispersal and Resettlement"? I've spent a while reading it, and it is not easy going, to say the least. However, it is a great resource for those of us with ancestors who went through this awful experience to get some idea of what hardships they went through.

My cousin Julia, to whom I am indebted for her persistent research into our family history and without whose efforts I would never have discovered Bronislaw's final whereabouts, has also pointed me to The Kresy-Siberia Group website, a site "dedicated to researching, remembering and recognising the Polish citizens deported, enslaved and killed by the Soviet Union during World War Two." Julia maintains a gallery section about our grandparents and their experiences.

Christian this is your cousin Jason... it is fantastic that you were able to visit Kanimech and facilitate a kind of closure for all of us.

I look forward to seeing you again some time in the future!

Chris,

For those of us on the same trail, you offer inspiration. So cool that people in the area remember the Polish soldiers with such kindness. My grandfathers were both buried somewhere there and I long ago gave up on finding their graves. Thanks for making me rethink this.
